Honda
Civic Tops Stolen-Car List
DETROIT
(AP) - The 1995 Honda Civic, 1989 Toyota Camry and 1991 Honda Accord
were the vehicles most often reported stolen in the United States
in 2004, according to a nonprofit group that tracks insurance crimes.
The
National Insurance Crime Bureau, based in Palos Hills, Ill., said
motor vehicle theft was down 1.9 percent last year. A total of 1.2
million vehicles were reported stolen. Car thefts were down in all
regions except the West, where they were up 36.2 percent over 2003,
the NICB said Monday.
Rounding
out the list of the top 10 most-stolen vehicles were the 1994 Dodge
Caravan; the 1994 Chevrolet C/K 1500; the 1997 Ford F-150; the 2003
Dodge Ram; the 1990 Acura Integra; the 1988 Toyota Pickup and the
1991 Nissan Sentra.
Some
most-stolen lists calculate how likely a vehicle is to be stolen
by comparing the number of models stolen to the total number of
models registered. The NICB list shows which were stolen most often.
The Civic and Camry are among the best-selling vehicles in the United
States.
The
NICB said the best defense against car theft is using the lock.
A visible or audible warning device also can help deter thieves,
the group said.

BASF
trainers announce online sweepstakes to promote refinish career
program
Students
in U.S., Canada, Puerto Rico can enter to win unique toolbox and
seminar
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., November 7, 2005The BASF Automotive Refinish
Solutions
business training department has announced a new sweepstakes that
uses custom painting to promote the companys Internet portal
and to spur interest in a rewarding repair industry career.
The sweepstakes runs from October 1, 2005 through December 31,
2005, and is open to all students enrolled in the fall term at
a recognized Career and Technical Education (CATE) course in the
United States (subject to state laws), Puerto Rico and Canada
(except Quebec). Entrants will be eligible to win a one-of-a-kind
custom-painted BASF toolbox (roll cab and chest), complete with
a wide array of refinishing tools and supplies, including
the unique Glasurit Small Damage Repair System. The retail value
of the toolbox
and tools is approximately $7,700 (U.S.)
To enter the sweepstakes, students must visit the BASF Refinish
website at http://www.BASFrefinish.com. One winner, drawn from
all entries postmarked before midnight of December 31, will receive
the fully equipped toolbox, which will be finished by a team of
professional BASF paint technicians as part of a custom painting
seminar conducted at the winners CATE facility.
The prize in this sweepstakes is more than just a unique
and valuable toolbox, said William Jay Johnston,
Manager Training and Development for BASFs Automotive Refinish
Solutions business in North America. It includes a seminar
that will demonstrate custom painting techniques and, we hope,
help inspire the creativity of the participants.
We at BASF are very interested in cultivating relationships
with the next generation of collision repair workers, Johnston
continued. The industry must continue to attract and develop
a steady stream of technicians that take pride in their ability
to return damaged vehicles to safe, original-equipment specifications.
The goal of our contest is to bring
attention to a rewarding career path that offers talented young
people job satisfaction and a secure future.
According to Johnston, using the Internet to promote the sweepstakes
is appropriate because it reflects the increasingly high-tech
nature of the collision repair industry. There may still
be some misconceptions out there about body shops and what they
do, he said. The reality is that todays body
shop technicians, as well as owners and managers, work with state-of-the-art
computer-based technologies. Much of the information they need
to perform their jobs, and even their training, is available on
sites like BASFrefinish.com or on dedicated microsites like BASFtoolbox.com,
where users can access a wide range of product and technical information.
We want people to know that this is an industry with an
exciting future, concluded Johnston.

Insurers
Launch Toll-Free National Insurance Crime TIPS Line
(1-877-IBC-TIPS) - Consumer tips proven to make a difference
TORONTO,
Oct. 6 /CNW/ - Canada's home, car and business insurers announced
today the launch of a national insurance crime TIPS line to make
it easier for Canadians to report auto theft, insurance fraud,
staged auto collisions and other crimes related to insurance.
These are extremely costly crimes that are committed every day
- both by organized theft or fraud rings and by ordinary policyholders
exaggerating a claim. Either way, these crimes
drive up the cost of insurance for everyone. There is an abundance
of proof that tips from the public can make a difference. In fact,
one such tip led to the arrest of several members of a
car theft ring that was stealing the same cars over and over again.
The tip came in to Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), which will
administer the new TIPS line, from a young school teacher in Montreal.
A few years prior, she had been in the market for a car. After
answering a classified ad, she wound up with just the car she
was looking for, for about $3,000 less than the lowest price she
had seen elsewhere. She thought she had gotten the deal of the
century. Two weeks later, the car was gone, stolen from her driveway
during the night.
"This individual was the victim of a common auto theft scheme,"
says Andre Beauchamp, Director, Auto Theft, IBC, "whereby
stolen cars are sold to unsuspecting consumers who answer a classified
ad directing them to a cell number. The deal is arranged, the
seller insists on cash and when the sale is complete, he keeps
a spare set of keys. A few days pass, and when the time is right,
the car is stolen once again, to be sold to the next unsuspecting
buyer."
In this instance, the tip came in several years later. "The
victim was again shopping for a car," says Beauchamp, "and
while answering another newspaper ad, she immediately recognized
the voice on the other end of the phone. She had learned her lesson,
and she wanted to make sure this guy learned his. She called IBC,
and they made sure that the police were there to greet the man
with the familiar voice when he showed up to try and sell her
yet another stolen car."
Insurance crime costs insurance companies and policyholders approximately
$3 billion a year. This is a conservative estimate. Furthermore,
far from being victimless, insurance crimes like auto theft cost
lives. Every year in Canada, 20-30 people lose their lives as
the result of car thieves trying to evade the authorities; often
driving too fast, while under the influence of drugs or alcohol,
and showing no regard for the safety of others.
"If you are offered a deal that seems too good to be true
on a car, it may seem harmless enough," says Beauchamp, "but
what you see from this scam is that if a criminal is willing to
steal from someone else, they are probably willing to steal from
you, too. Whenever someone is getting something for nothing, somebody
is paying for it."
Canada's home, car and business insurers want Canadians to take
the time to report insurance crime. Anyone with information about
a possible insurance crime can call the toll-free TIPS line at
1-877-IBC-TIPS (422-8477) or submit a tip on-line at www.ibc.ca.
All tips are kept confidential. "We're asking for people
to use their judgement. If you're offered a deal on a car that
sounds too good to be true, report it. If you overhear someone
talking about stealing a car, report it. When you submit a tip,
IBC will work with its member companies and the authorities to
make sure the wrongdoers are brought to justice," adds Beauchamp.
"If you are sick of standing by and watching other people
cheat while you pay for it, now you have a way to fight back."
Insurance Bureau of Canada is the national trade association of
the private property and casualty insurance industry. It represents
more than 90% of the non-government home, car and business insurance
in Canada. To view news releases and information, visit the media
section of IBC's website at www.ibc.ca.

NATA
associations unite for national voice
Various
mechanical and collision repair trade associations from across the
country met in Regina earlier this month to rejuvenate the National
Automotive Trades Association of Canada (NATA).
John Scissons, is executive vice-president of NATA, and executive
director of Saskatchewan Association of Automotive Repairers, (SAAR).
He explains that NATA is "the collective voice of independent
sector associations on automotive repair issues which are national
in scope. NATA does not aspire to speak for other sectors of the
automotive service and repair industry."
The National Automotive Trades Association of Canada currently represents:
Automotive Retailers Association of British Columbia (ARA); Automotive
Service and Repair Association of Alberta (ASRA); Saskatchewan Association
of Automotive Repairers (SAAR); Automotive Trades Association of
Manitoba (ATA); Hamilton District Autobody Repair Association (HARA);
Automotive Aftermarket Retailers of Ontario (AARO); Collision Repair
Association of Nova Scotia (CRANS).
NATA
president is British Columbia's Rob Lang is president of NATA, and
Bill Burkimsher of Ontario is secretary/treasurer. The organization
does not solicit membership from individual shop owners; it is funded
by regional and provincial associations.
NATA is actually a 58-year old organization, with current representation
on the Board of the Canadian Automotive Repair and Service Council
(CARS), along with the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers' Association
(CVMA), the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers
of Canada (AIAMC), the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association (CADA)
and the Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA).
CARS president Dan Bell commented, "The National Automotive
Trades Association was one of the founding board members of the
CARS Council, and has been a very important voice for the independent
repair sector over the years. As the repair and service industry
continues to evolve at a rapid pace, it is important for networks,
such as NATA, to exist to coordinate the efforts of its members."

Focus
on the customer, experts tell CSN participants
Customer
service insights, insurance industry trends and vehicle technology
were all explored at Collision Solutions Network's fall conference,
held recently at Deerhurst Resort, in Huntsville, ON. A panel of
auto insurance industry experts were unanimous in their opinion
that the frequency of claims will rise again, spurred by accident
forgiveness programs and rate reductions. Ted Doyle of ING commented
that higher deductibles are likely a fact of life now, but he predicted
competition will put downward pressure on
insurance rates. "We will start competing with each other and
we will drop the rates." However, he added that the higher
volumes of consumer-pay jobs will likely continue.
Scott Biggs, CEO of Assured Performance Network, told attendees
the business mantra for this decade is customer care. "Give
the customer peace of mind," says Biggs. He suggests that if
clients have the perception of protection and comfort, then a collision
ceases to be a crisis and becomes an inconvenience.
Biggs' Assured Performance Network, which operates in the U.S.,
operates as kind of banner program, offering collision repair operations
a "secondary brand" that emphasizes customer care and
effective shop management practices.

I-CAR
Education Foundation Launches Collision Repair for Kids Web Sites
The I-CAR Education Foundation announced the launch of a series
of Web sites designed to bolster the collision industry's recruitment
effort by providing a single resource to stimulate interest and
inform students and their parents about the challenging careers
available in the collision repair industry. The recruitment effort
consists of two Web sites:
collisioncareers.org and collisionkids.org.
The
Web sites will provide students, their parents, school counselors
and the public at large with facts about the industry. The sites
will explain the many rewarding careers available to people who
choose to work in the industry.
While
administered by the I-CAR Education Foundation, the Web sites are
designed to be a truly industry-wide effort that will provide all
of the different segments and businesses in the collision industry
with the ability to market themselves to young people in search
of a challenging and rewarding career.
"The
sites will demonstrate the depth and breadth of career opportunities
across all industry segments," said Ron Ray, executive director
of the Foundation. "From repairers to insurers, suppliers and
related service businesses, the collision industry offers a wide
variety of challenging and rewarding career opportunities that await
young people."
The
high school level site, www.collisioncareers.org, combines detailed
information about both the collision repair process, training programs
and facts and figures on employment with educational and entertaining
content including games, downloadable wallpapers for computers and
other content.
Ray
explained, "Today's young people use the Internet as both entertainment
and a source of information. Providing this resource for students
looking into their future career opportunities both explains the
details of careers, and demonstrates the industry's support for
entry-level recruitment programs."
The
second site, www.collisionkids.org, includes entertainment and education
content about the industry geared towards elementary and middle
school age students.
"Collisionkids.org
will not only entertains and educates young people, but inform parents
and educators of elementary and middle school-age student about
our industry," said Ray.
Both
sites were developed through the continued industry support and
donations to the I-CAR Education Foundation. Content on both sites
will be updated monthly. People and businesses can sponsor content
on the sites to benefit both the industry and their individual recruitment
efforts.

Keystone
Reports 12 Percent Climb in Crash Parts Business
Keystone
Automotive Industries reported record second quarter revenues
for its fiscal 2006 second quarter ended September 30, 2005. Net
income for quarter climbed 19.8 percent to $2.9 million from a
year ago. Net sales for the same period increased 9.3 percent
to $139.2 million from last year.
Same
store sales for the fiscal second quarter and the six-month period
increased 8.5 percent and 8.9 percent (adjusted to reflect the 27-week
period a year ago), respectively.
Results
for second fiscal quarter were solid, supported by a 14 percent
increase in Keystone's bumper business, a 12 percent climb in crash
parts. Excluding the impact of Hurricane Katrina and the fire in
Michigan, results would have been even more robust -- underscoring
progress being made in the areas of supply-chain management and
cost controls,'' said Richard L. Keister, president and chief executive
officer.
Keister
highlighted the Illinois Supreme Court ruling in the Avery vs. State
Farm case which occurred approximately half-way into the quarter.
He reiterated his belief that this represents a significant
victory for consumers as generic collision replacement parts are
a high quality cost-savings alternative to car maker's parts in
a $16.0 billion collision parts industry that is 72 percent controlled
by automobile manufacturers.
As
previously announced, second quarter results were impacted by Hurricane
Katrina's damage to Keystone's operations in the Gulf region, with
sales reduced by approximately $700,000 and write-offs totaling
$350,000 relating to account receivables and insurance deductibles
for property damage. The New Orleans facility will take several
months to rebuild. In addition, Keystone experienced damage from
Hurricane Katrina to its Mobile, Alabama, facility and is in the
process of relocating operations from this location.
In
addition, results for the fiscal second quarter were impacted by
a fire that destroyed a bumper remanufacturing facility located
in Greenville, Michigan, which recycles plastic bumpers. As previously
announced, operations have been temporarily relocated to its facility
in Saranac, Michigan. The non-insured losses were $250,000.

presentations, gain knowledge to add to their experience and network
with industry peers for two full days of action packed activity.
"We are excited to participate in this event," remarked

Independent
repair shop associations now have a national voice.
"As
the repair and service industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace,
it is important for networks such as NATA to exist to coordinate
the efforts of its members."
On
October 15, 2005, an historic meeting took place between mechanical
and collision repair trade associations from across the country.
Executive Vice-President of NATA, John Scissons, of the Saskatchewan
Association of Automotive Repairers (SAAR), welcomed guests to Regina,
where NATA delegates met for the first time in 10 years. The goal-to
rejuvenate the National Automotive Trades Association of Canada
(NATA). "We can now emphasize the needs and concerns of repair
associations and their members from coast to coast," said Scissons.
NATA is a federally chartered 58-year old organization with current
representation on the Board of the Canadian Automotive Repair and
Service Council (CARS), along with the Canadian Vehicle Manufacturers'
Association (CVMA), the Association of International Automobile
Manufacturers of Canada (AIAMC), the Canadian Automobile Dealers
Association (CADA) and the Automotive Industries Association of
Canada (AIA).
NATA
is the collective voice of independent sector associations on automotive
repair issues that are national in scope. Independent shop owners
are the grassroots of the automotive service and repair industry.
The pulse of the independent shop owner is the independent sector
association that works to protect and advance their interests at
the regional and provincial level.
NATA
does not aspire to speak for other sectors of the automotive service
and repair industry. Parts suppliers, vehicle manufacturers, car
dealerships, etc., already have national associations to represent
their specific needs. Given that NATA is dedicated to the independent
sector, the position it takes on industry issues will therefore
never be compromised by the interests of others.
In
1989, representatives from the many sectors of the automotive industry
created the Canadian Automotive Repair and Service Council (CARS).
One reason for its formation was the perceived need for "a
national office to further the wider-interests of the industry,
and to address cross-sector issues and problems." NATA embraced
those ideals, helped to found CARS, and remains fully committed
to the organization.
As
the representative of regional and provincial independent sector
associations, NATA will continue to work cooperatively through CARS
to advance its affiliates' objectives. NATA also views CARS as a
potential ombudsman, of sorts (i.e. to mitigate the inevitable differences
of opinion that periodically arise between independents and other
industry sectors and/or the associations that represent them).
The
harmonious relationship shared by CARS and NATA serves the industry
well. Affiliates' close ties to shop owners and their employees
uniquely qualifies NATA to function as a virtual "one stop"
for CARS' human resource needs. When manpower is required for focus
groups or project committees, NATA is able to provide CARS with
grassroots support clear across Canada.
CARS
President Dan Bell welcomes the revitalization of NATA: "The
National Automotive Trades Association was one of the founding board
members of the CARS Council, and has been a very important voice
for the independent repair sector over the years. As the repair
and service industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace, it is
important for networks such as NATA to exist to coordinate the efforts
of its members. CARS would like to congratulate NATA on its growing
membership and wishes the organization much continued success in
the years ahead."
NATA
does not solicit membership from individual shop owners. It is funded
directly by properly chartered, not-for-profit regional and provincial
independent sector associations that represent mechanical and collision
repair shop operators. However, the strength of NATA is not limited
to its direct funding. Quite the contrary. Its overall might can
be measured by the collective resources of the many affiliate organizations
comprising its membership. "Strength in Numbers!"
In
the vast and wonderful country that is Canada, good communication
is essential to the well being of a national organization. NATA
will utilize an interactive website, VoIP, web cam, and other state-of-the-art
communications technology to ensure independents from the Atlantic
to the Pacific are kept in close touch.
The
National Automotive Trades Association of Canada currently represents:
"
Automotive Retailers Association of British Columbia (ARA)
" Automotive Service and Repair Association of Alberta (ASRA)
" Saskatchewan Association of Automotive Repairers (SAAR)
" Automotive Trades Association of Manitoba (ATA)
" Hamilton district Autobody Repair Association (HARA)
" Automotive Aftermarket Retailers of Ontario (AARO)
" Collision Repair Association of Nova Scotia (CRANS)
The
President of NATA is British Columbia's Rob Lang, the Executive
Vice-President is John Scissons from Saskatchewan, and the Secretary/Treasurer
is Bill Burkimsher of Ontario.

STAND
UP FOR THE TRADES An Opinion
I
would like to personally congratulate Conservative leader Stephen
Harper for finally acknowledging the importance of skilled tradespeople
to the Canadian economy. This has been a long time coming for
any political party.
I would like to challenge Harper and all other federal and provincial
politicians to consider an important link in young people considering
the skilled trades as a viable career option.
For the past five years, I have worked for an industry association
promoting skilled trades to young people in Ontario. I know
that there will be a shortage of skilled-trade workers in Canada,
and the Number 1 cause of this is the lack of information and
the low perception held by society and our school system.
For the past several years, I have attended government meetings,
think tanks, conferences etc., explaining the need to make technological
education an essential component of a child's education. By
this I mean, not computer studies, but real hands-on application
of technology (ie. design, construction, horticulture, transportation,
manufacturing, hospitality etc.)
In Ontario, a high school student does not have to take any
kind of tech credit in order to achieve his or her diploma,
and yet technology has a very great influence on our lives.
By not making it a mandatory credit, we are sending the message
to our students that technology is only for fun (only as an
elective). With this perception in place, how can we ever encourage
students to view the skilled trades as a viable career path?
Recently, the Ontario government has introduced new measures
to reduce the high school dropout rate. This will not be enough.
I truly believe that if every student in high school (and elementary
school for that matter), was to be exposed to technology education,
the dropout rate would decline because we are finally addressing
the needs of those students who learn by doing and are not academically
inclined.
As a society, we continue to have the perception that a career
in the trades is dirty and low level. Although there are many
campaigns out there promoting the skilled trades,
I believe that the missing link is the inclusion of technology
education in the everyday curriculum.
There is an excellent opportunity for the the federal and provincial
governments to make a commitment to provide mandatory technology
programs in our schools. In order to make Canada more competitive
and productive, I believe that every student should have an
understanding and appreciation of technology and how it affects
our lives today. I am quite sure that many students who feel
intimidated by the academics of school, will be inspired and
motivated to continue on with their studies, in a career that
is in high demand and is very rewarding.
It is time we take technology education seriously and invest
in skills that are important to our everyday existence and overall
productivity and prosperity.

Two
Solution Providers are first to receive new CIECA Certification
Northbrook,
IL The Collision Industry Electronic Commerce Association
(CIECA) announced today that ProcessClaims and ADP Claims Services
Group are the first companies to become certified under this new
program.
The
purpose of the CIECA Certification program is to validate the consistent
use of current CIECA XML standards in the collision repair industry
and to ensure that the implementation of the software applications
interchange documents is in compliance with CIECA standards and
implementation guidelines. Only CIECA Members are eligible for certification.
CIECA certification ensures to all trading partners in the
collision repair industry that the companys certified application/product
follow CIECAs XML Standards, said Fred Iantorno, CIECAs
Executive Director.
We
are very pleased to announce this industry milestone in conjunction
with ADP. There is no doubt that agreeing on a CIECA standard provides
value to the insurance industry. We see it as a competitive edge
to our clients and their partners in terms of cost savings, data
quality, improved trading partner communications, and increased
efficiency said Paul Farber, CEO ProcessClaims. Paul continued,
This is a great step forward for the entire industry and we
can only hope others will follow.
Mark
Kovacs, Professional Services Business Analyst for ProcessClaims,
suggested that the main benefit was application interoperability.
ProcessClaims has always employed a platform agnostic position
regarding integration and data communication. However without industry
standards it was difficult to leverage our stance to the benefit
of the broader market. This Certification allows carriers to truly
leverage application interoperability by choosing best in class
partners.
ADP
Claims Services Group is an active CIECA member and a long-time
supporter of CIECAs open standards. Clients rely on ADP for
integrated solutions connecting their legacy and third-party claim
systems to ADP products and services. Certification is an important
next step that demonstrates our commitment to providing flexible,
extendable solutions, said Daphne Li, Vice President of Marketing
for ADP Claims Services Group.
The
CIECA seal of approval assures the end customer of interoperability
of the applications interchange documents with other applications
that also bear the CIECA CERTIFIED logo. More information about
CIECA and the Certification program can be viewed on the CIECA web

Associations
Offer Huge Value
By
John Norris, Executive Director, HARA
The
Collision Industry Information and Assistance (www.ciia.com) web
site, operated by the Hamilton District Autobody Repair Association,
handles over 10,000 hits a day. The phone lines often field 30 calls
a day and at least 60 emails. Over 400 shops call regularly for
environmental help with training, certification assistance, wage
incentive information, hiring questions and inquiries from insurance
contact lists to manuals on how to market to brokers all the way
to requests for guest speakers at their local schools to getting
a fax number to send copies of abusive towing invoices.
This
is how a professional collision repair trade association works.
Individual
association mandates may be different but their passion and vision
should be clear and consistent: Help shops, serve the interests
of repairers, represent them and provide opportunities to move member
interests forward.
Let's
face it -- it's a tough marketplace our there and many shops are
struggling to stay profitable. They need more help right now and
should recognize that although their voice may not be strong individually,
their association's voice can be loud, active and successful.
Why
then are there so few shop members in their trade associations?
One reason is lack of communications. And it goes both ways. Some
repairers only hear from their trade association when once a year
an invoice shows up on the fax machine. Good professional associations
communicate by holding regular neighborhood style meetings or surveys
to gain better incite into shop needs -- yet often shops don't show
up at meetings or respond to the very associations trying to help
them.
Perhaps,
shops haven't yet realized the practical benefits of membership
in an active association. Can shop concerns be addressed? What's
in it for a shop to be a member?
GAUGE
YOUR REPRESENTATION
You
should always ask yourself the two basic association membership
questions:
What
can you do for me now and what can you do for the industry in the
future?
Most
professional associations can provide you their answers quickly
and the better associations have so many answers that it often has
grown to a list of advantages for the shop.
For
instance right now, do they provide services such as benefit programs,
garage insurance, uniform and product discounts, office and stationary
products discounts, forms, brochures, posters, manuals, training
courses, available tax credits or grants that you can use right
now to cut your immediate costs and put more money in your till?
What
about down the road? Can they prove to you that they are handling
the meetings and writing the letters and building the necessary
support with media, insurers, suppliers or government? Does the
association have the respect and trust it requires to solve your
issues? For instance, can they show you or post on their web site
or newsletters the meeting presentations or script or news releases
showing their successes in addressing your concerns.
TOUGH
SCHEDULE
Many
professional associations struggle with the daily frustration that
they are taking time away from working on needed industry projects
that can help shops and instead, are out trying to raise funds to
continue on with their good work- from the very shops they are trying
to help. If shops better supported their professional trade associations
with their membership dues, because of their recognized value for
the industry, associations could solve your industry issues quicker.
If
your professional trade association is working that hard for you,
you should be working hard for them. Their membership dues are fair
and you should not only pay their invoice when it arrives, but be
calling them to ask to become a more active member. Volunteer to
be school speaker, a letter writer or employer/mentor for young
students interested in working in our trade on the association's
behalf. Only through your help in adding to the
common strength can your professional association make your voice,
join with other voices, and become stronger, more effective and
listened to where it counts.
