AIA President To Retire From Association Life: Comprehensive Succession Plan In Place
June 8, 2007, Ottawa , Ontario -- After a distinguished 9 year term as President of the Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA), Ray Datt has decided to retire from association life. Ray led the Association through a number of strategic changes during his tenure as president, ensuring the Association's relevance and co ntribution to the automotive aftermarket industry.
The AIA Executive Committee has struck a search co mmittee, led by Chairman John Cochrane , to find a suitable replacement to take the helm of AIA, to ensure the Association's co ntinued leadership position within the automotive aftermarket industry and within the not-for-profit co mmunity. The search co mmittee anticipates making an announcement with regard to Ray's replacement by no later than the fall of 2007 . A three-month transition period before Ray retires is also anticipated.
"We were incredibly fortunate to have Ray during such a pivotal time in our history," says AIA Chair John Cochrane (Cochrane Automotive). "His valuable contributions to the industry leave the Association well-positioned for continued success."
Ray joined AIA in 1998, for what was supposed to be a five-year term as President before moving on to new challenges. "What started out as a five-year co ntract was extended several times because I enjoyed working with AIA members and guiding the Association through its evolution," says Ray. "While I am not ready to retire, I am looking forward to a less scheduled life where I will be able to utilize my 40 years of automotive aftermarket experience and network of co ntacts to assist organizations in need of such skills. In fact AIA and I have worked out a deal where I will stay involved on a part-time basis with the Association in 2008."
During Ray's tenure, the AIA business model evolved from reliance on a controversial trade show to a more stable sponsorship revenue base. He was also instrumental in bringing independent automotive shops into the fold, through the Automotive Service Provider Association Council. Finally, under his leadership, AIA became more active on public affairs issues such as the launch of the Be Car Care Aware public relations campaign in Canada and in lobbying government on the Right to Repair issue .
"Change is a healthy part of any organization, and AIA is no different," co ntinues the Chair. "The Board of Directors, co mmittees and co uncils, and existing AIA staff will ensure co ntinuity and stability over the co ming months. A new President will also provide an opportunity for renewal within the industry."
John Cochrane concluded by saying, "We want to thank Ray for his dedication and commitment over the years. His professionalism was evident even as he announced his retirement plans to us as he guided us through the succession planning process."
AIA will begin advertising for a new president during the week of June 11, 2007. Interested candidates will be able to view the advertisement on the AIA website, and are en co uraged to follow the application process as outlined.

U.S. Right to Repair Update
June 11, 2007 The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, the Association of International Automobile Manufacturers and the Automotive Service Association applauded Senator Warren Hardy for his efforts to ensure that consumers have access to the vehicle repair facility of their choice. A recently passed resolution, sponsored by Sen. Hardy, clarifies automakers' commitment to providing the same service and training information to independent repairers as made available to franchised dealers.
Alliance CEO Dave McCurdy stated, "Manufacturers recognize the importance of the independent repair industry and want to make sure that consumers have the option of having their vehicles serviced by the repairer of their choice."
Roughly 75 percent of all post warranty repairs are performed by independent repair facilities. This resolution ensures the continuing viability of the automotive service industry and eliminates the need for current and future legislation.
AIAM President and CEO Mike Stanton said, "We believe our customers should seek vehicle repair services wherever reliable and first-rate service is offered.
"Auto makers work very hard to make high-quality cars and trucks, and their reputations could be jeopardized if customers felt they could not go to the service and repair store of their choosing."
To help resolve service and repair related issues, repairers are encouraged to work through the National Automotive Service Task Force. NASTF serves as a forum to identify and resolve gaps involving motor vehicle repair information and tools.
This national, voluntary solution has proven to be an effective resource for repairers and manufacturers alike, and over the course of the last six years, has managed to develop an effective forum to point independent repairers to the information and tools they need and to provide a mechanism to report and resolve the gaps that remain.
ASA President Ron Pyle added, "ASA is proud of the progress made for independent repairers relative to service, training and tool information."
This resolution underscores the longstanding and important role that independent repair facilities play in the automotive industry.

CARSTAR CHARITY EVENT TO RAISE FUNDS IN THE
FIGHT AGAINST CYSTIC FIBROSIS
June 11, 2007 Volunteers at more than 70 CARSTAR collision repair centres across the country are getting ready to 'soap it up' as part of an ongoing campaign to help the thousands of young Canadians battling cystic fibrosis (CF). The fourth annual CARSTAR 'Soaps it Up' National Car Wash Day takes place on Saturday, June 16, 2007.
This year's campaign, which takes place on Father's Day weekend, also shines the spotlight on dads, especially the many dedicated dads who care for the special needs of children living with CF. CARSTAR is encouraging kids and families to make a car wash ticket a gift for dad this Father's Day and help support these hero dads.
Cystic fibrosis is the most common, fatal genetic disease affecting young Canadians. A devastating disease, CF attacks primarily the lungs and the digestive system and requires a daily regime of intensive physical therapy and medications.
CARSTAR Automotive Canada has been a dedicated supporter of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for several years, after it was discovered that the granddaughter of a CARSTAR franchisee was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
"We're committed to making a difference in the fight against this disease," said Sam Mercanti, President and CEO, CARSTAR Automotive Canada. "Every year the support for this campaign continues to grow and we continue to be overwhelmed by the way our franchisees and partners get involved. Last year we washed over 5,000 cars and raised over $60,000. This year will be even bigger."
All proceeds from the car wash will support the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CCFF) and other local fundraising organizations. The funds raised for the CCFF will be directed toward research and treatment. In 2007, the CCFF will fund more than 50 research projects that are exploring all aspects of the CF puzzle, including research into lung transplantation.
Sponsors for this year's event are Quiznos Sub and Shell. Tickets for the car wash cost $5 each and include a coupon for a free Quiz Kidz Meal at participating Quiznos Sub locations and the chance to win a California Dreamin' Vacation. For more information about the fundraising event and to find a participating location near you, please visit www.carstar.ca.
Through this campaign and other fundraising initiatives, CARSTAR collision repair centres have raised over $1.5 million to help fund research and treatment in the fight against cystic fibrosis.

INSURER LAWSUITS AGAINST SHOPS REACH BIZARRE LEVEL Legal Action Taken By Insurer For Ten Dollars
June 10, 2007
Alfie Emery, Manager at Hamilton Group Autobody was shocked when the process-order clerk arrived at their General Motors linked-dealership with a court order, ordering release of a vehicle over a $10.00 storage fee.
The insurance company didn't agree that a $50.00 per day indoor storage rate was reasonable-they only wanted to pay $40.00 per day-so the insurer sued.
It didn't seem to matter that the name on the lawsuit was not legally the name of the shop, that the owner of the car was not aware of the lawsuit, that the pricing was printed prominently on the posted price sign on the wall, or that the shop was pricing as per the industry recommendations price list.
"Being sued by an insurer for $10.00, over a reasonable posted indoor storage rate that is $15.00 a day less that legally allowed in areas such as Brampton is very odd and seems to fit within the unreasonable thinking by some insurers that shops that charge fair compensation rates are somehow abusive" says the industry trade association. "For an insurer to pay the time and travel costs of a para-legal and a $75.00 court fee for a ten-dollar a day storage issue is bizarre" says John Norris of the www.ciia.com Collision Industry Information and Assistance.
This increasingly difficult issue of insurance company lawsuits against shops was raised with the senior insurance regulators of the Financial Services Commission of Ontario at a meeting held with collision repair association representatives, last week in Toronto.

Maaco Makes Dramatic Cuts To Smog-Causing Emissions
MILTON , Ontario- June 4, 2007
Canada 's leading collision repair and auto painting organization is switching to new environmentally friendly methods and materials, cutting pollution emissions by 64 per cent. Maaco Systems Canada, Inc. will immediately make dramatic cuts to the compounds that contribute to smog two years ahead of the Government of Canada's deadline.
"We're very aware of the impact that paints, solvents and other chemicals used in the painting process can have on the environment," said Gary Dohring, President Maaco Systems Canada, Inc. "That's why we're not waiting another two years to do what must be done. We're doing it today. We're changing our practices now to reduce air pollution and help protect and preserve the environment for generations to come."
The Government of Canada is bringing forward a regulation requiring the auto repair industry to reduce its annual volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions by 40 per cent. The current proposal is that the regulation will come into force in the beginning of January 2009.
Maaco Systems Canada, which has 36 franchised body shops across the country, will cut its VOC emissions by an additional 24 per cent over and above government targets. The decision to go early will prevent roughly 65 tonnes of harmful emissions from ever entering the environment between now and when the regulation is due to take effect. That's the equivalent of taking approximately 1000 vehicles off the road each year.
VOCs are compounds containing at least one carbon atom, excluding carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. When released into the atmosphere, VOCs can participate in atmospheric photochemical reactions leading to the formation of ground-level ozone and particulate matter - the main ingredients of smog. Smog, in turn, has serious health implications for Canadians, including thousands of premature deaths, hospital admissions and emergency room visits every year.
Major VOC emission sources are the organic solvents used in many consumer and commercial products, such as underarm anti-perspirants, exterior paints used on homes, commercial printing inks, exhaust emissions from cars and trucks, and various industrial processes such as chemical manufacturing.
In making the switch to a more environmentally friendly approach, Maaco Systems Canada's franchise owners will convert their respective facilities to low-VOC paints, modify their procedures and undergo comprehensive training to ensure proper handling of the new materials. Some shops have already made the shift and have begun using environmentally friendly materials and practices in refinishing vehicles. Others are in the process of converting.
The Lung Association, the national voice on respiratory health issues for Canadians, welcomes the leadership being displayed by Maaco in cutting VOC emissions. The Lung Association has long advocated for dramatic reductions in VOCs and other harmful emissions. "Taking steps that reduce VOC emissions is vital if we are to see significant improvements in air quality," said Nora Sobolov, President and CEO of The Canadian Lung Association. "We hope that other industries will follow Maaco's proactive lead in cutting harmful emissions before they are required to do so by government and to levels that exceed regulatory requirements."
Pollution Probe, which has been advocating for better environmental practices in Canada for more than 30 years, also supports Maaco's proactive initiative. "Protecting the planet and its people requires that we reduce emissions of VOCs. These emissions can be a significant air toxic themselves, as well as a major component of smog," said Bob Oliver, Transportation Director, Pollution Probe.
It is estimated that more than five kilotonnes of VOCs are emitted each year from coatings and surface cleaners used in automotive refinishing operations in Canada .
"Maaco believes that industry has a responsibility to reduce its impact on the environment today rather than tomorrow," added Dohring. "Reducing emissions requires a collaborative effort and I challenge my industry counterparts to do their part to reduce air pollution as soon as possible."
Maaco Systems Canada, Inc. has been operating in Canada for more than 30 years and is headquartered in Milton , Ontario . The auto body chain has serviced 1.1 million customers, including fleet contracts with Canada Post, FedEx Ground and Rogers, among others.

THE NATIONAL COLLISION REPAIR WORKSHOPS
at Automechanika Canada present
BUSY BUT BROKE
Successful alternative profitability models in collision
repair in Canada
In the very tough and volatile Canadian marketplace, body shop owners are tense and concerned about their future. There are alternatives to the traditional business model that has body shops scrambling to achieve 3 to 5 percent profitability.
Speakers will include:
An Ontario collision repair shop manager will discuss how his facility is able to maintain a positive working relationship with insurers without the benefit of DRPs and is able to achieve two to three million dollars in annual sales with a door rate of $76.00 per hour.
A U.S. shop owner with a 28,000 square foot shop will discuss how he has increased his profits by continuing his relationship with two one million dollar insurance companies after discontinuing their DRP program.
Shop owners, including a banner franchise operator with significant DRP work, are eager to discuss alternative methods for shop profitability.
We will also discuss:
How a group of Canadian shops have decreased their DRPs from twelve to two companies, but were able to increase their door rate to $57.00 per hour.
How shop owners are taking on a "CASH ONLY" policy, having the insurance company paying the customer directly. In the case of a customer pay job the customer will have the option of using the shop's consumer credit program.
How a multi shop owner that discontinued his relationship with a franchise after five years has increased his profits by returning to independent.
How a shop in Central Canada that was doing $3.2 million dollars in DRP sales is now doing $1.2 million dollars without DRPs but with an increase in profit.
How Canadian shop owners are insisting on their posted door rate, at times receiving the difference between their invoice and an insurance payment from the customer.
Also featured at the workshop:
The difference in shops conversion to low-VOC products in Canada and the European Union.
Shops that make most of their money by NOT repairing vehicles. The fees debate, are they bandits or just standing tough in their marketplace?
Why so many shops and insurers are ending up in court. Why can't we just get along?
Insurance impacts on a shop, from auto renewal rate increases to rebate regulations.
The National Collision Repair Workshop on alternative profitability will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2007, once in the morning and again in the afternoon at Automechanika Canada / CarFixWorld located at the International Centre on Airport Road in Toronto.
Cost:
Morning or Afternoon Session $99.00 plus GST per person, includes one VIP pass for the show ($35.00 value) as well as an invitation to the Beer and BBQ event on Thursday evening.
If you wish to participate with speakers from Canada, United States and the European Union, please contact 1-866-309-4272, register online at www.ciia.com or e-mail info@ciia.com

AUTOMECHANIKA COMES TO CANADA
September 26, 27, 28, 2007
International Centre - Toronto
Messe Frankfurt, the producer of eleven Automechanika automotive trade shows around the globe, is teaming up with CarFixWORLD to make Canada number twelve. With over 250 exhibitors and 4,000 attendees anticipated, Automechanika Canada is destined to be our country's largest aftermarket trade show.
To be held September 26-28 at Toronto's International Centre, the show has to be considered a giant leap forward for the Business Information Group (BIG). The publisher of SSGM and other automotive industry magazines, BIG realized that many players in the Canadian aftermarket - suppliers and retailers alike - wanted a comprehensive trade show.
"BIG's intuition and knowledge of the industry encouraged them to bankroll the inaugural CarFixWORLD event held last fall. To leverage that initial success into a partnership with Messe Frankfurt, and roll out Automechanika Canada a mere year later, well... I think that's praiseworthy to say the least," observed HARA President Tony Nigro. HARA ( the Hamilton District Autobody Repair Association), was the prime organizer of the Career Day event at last year's CarFixWORLD show with almost 3000 interested students attending and learning. For more information on Career Day, see: http://www.ciia.com/provinces/ontario/november06.html#2600
Anyone inclined to go "ho, hum" concerning the joint Messe Frankfurt/BIG announcement is missing its significance, according to Burkimsher. This puts the city of Toronto and the Canadian aftermarket on an international stage with Bangkok, Buenos Aires, Dubai, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur, Mexico City, Moscow, Rome, Shanghai, St. Petersburg and, of course, Frankfurt, where the Automechanika brand had its beginning, he said.
The 2006 Automechanika show in Frankfurt attracted an astounding 165,000 visitors, 40 percent of them from outside Germany. These attendees included a significant increase in top decision makers from previous years. In addition, 96 percent of all visitors were satisfied with the exhibits and product groups at the show. This growth and satisfaction is a trend throughout all the Automechanika shows worldwide, confirming a positive outlook for the future of the industry.
Automechanika Canada will cover the entire spectrum of the aftermarket:
Featured product groups will include parts & systems, accessories & tuning, repair & maintenance, service station & car wash and tires & wheels. Additional programs will include conference sessions featuring product innovation and technical training, career opportunities for apprentices and students, product demonstrations, and industry displays. The three-day event will offer exhibitors the opportunity to showcase their products to thousands of service and repair shop owners, technicians, installers, jobbers, media, and industry professionals.
Discussions are underway with the Ontario affiliates of NATA - the National Automotive Trades Association to again manage the 'Career Day' student activities at the show. AARO and HARA, the Hamilton District Autobody Repair Association, are the current Ontario-based members of NATA, a national affiliation of 'grassroots' service provider organizations.
